I was approached yesterday by Linda while she was at Nursery (Taylor's EYSEN Teacher) and asked if i would be willing to let her do an article on Taylor for a newsletter. She wants to write a review of how Mainstream Nurseries cope with children who are Autistic and have other learning difficulties and she has chosen Taylor as her subject and his Nursery. Considering we are all like one big happy family and they have been through it all with us, from not knowing what was wrong to all his assessments, strangers in and out of Nursery and to his Diagnosis i think he is a wise choice (but then again I'm his mom so i would say that!!)
I'm not sure which newsletter he will feature in (but I'll bug her for a copy lol) or when, all i know is she wants a picture of me, Taylor and Louise (his key worker at Nursery) to go along with the article and she will let us know nearer to the time what information etc she needs off us and when the photo will be taken. My baby is going to be famous lol
Yesterday was good fun. Taylor came into the dining room and found a bottle of bubbles on the shelf. He pointed and said bubbles. I took them down and asked him "do you remember bubbles" he said "yes please, bubbles" i asked "what do you say" he replied "bubbles" i was just abut ready to give him them and he paused and said "i waa bubbles" i gave him a big kiss along with the bubbles and told him "well done, good boy" this was without the aid of a PECS picture as i haven't yet had chance to print them off as we have no ink. I wasn't sure it would work without a picture so i didn't push him but he asked the same way for the bubbles 5 times while we were playing them, taking turns. Later on in the afternoon he came in shouting milk and went into the kitchen to get his cup. As i took the milk out of the fridge i asked him "what do you say" he replied "i wan milk" i gave him the milk and he poured it himself then went into the living room to watch cbeebies. He then came in 5 minutes later and said "i scooter" now all i can say is I'm glad i got him asking for things without PECS as it would have been very difficult to exchange a picture for a scooter!!! he then got his scooter and rode off. A few minutes later he came back without the scooter and said "box" pointing to his tub of rice (less messier solution to sand as he doesn't eat rice!!!) i went to the freezer where the box was and asked him "does Taylor want rice" he said "yes please" and pointed to the box. I asked him "what do you say" he replied "i want rice" after 3 attempts he finally go the word 'want' right and not only that was asking for all kinds of things the way he had done at Speech Therapy but without the PECS, i couldn't believe it.
I tried to ring Vicky (therapist) to tell her what he was doing but couldn't get hold of her, so i just carried on with him. I didn't push him too much but tried to get him to say it for as many different things as possible and it worked. I tried to ring her again this afternoon but still couldn't get hold of her. I will try again on Monday. I will use the PECS if she advises it but just at the moment without ink i can't print any off, i have the pictures on the laptop ready. The ink should be here over the weekend but the way he's going at the moment i don't think he needs the PECS as much as we thought he did. As i said though if she thinks PECS will help him along a little more then i will print them and use them too. I think it's brilliant that he's asking for things without them though at this early a stage. He only had that one session where the woman got him to extend his sentences by the PECS and i hadn't done it with him since his session on Tuesday due to no ink. I can't wait to tell her the good news!!! I am so proud of him, i can't put it into words.
Today has been a little un-eventful but I'm glad of a few hours of peace & quiet. He has come on so much in the last few months/weeks that he now wants almost full attention in everything that he does, which i know is a good thing as he's learning to interact with me more than he did before but it gets a bit too much sometimes, especially when you're used to him telling you to go away and get that half hour to be able to clean up or do the washing without him interrupting you every 2 minutes. He has been calm and quiet today which usually worries me as it usually means he's tired or poorly, but he seemed fine. He didn't eat hardly any of his dinner which once again is usually a sign he is sickening for something but was running around and singing away to cbeebies just like normal. He went to Nursery with no problems and was in a good mood. Except wandering around town to do a few things nothing much has happened today. He did ask for a few things today as yesterday saying "i want" whatever it was but he seemed as though he couldn't be bothered so i didn't push him. When he said it i praised him and when he didn't want to and just took whatever it was off me i said "OK, then try later" and pointed to what he was holding and said "i want" whatever it was and he said "yes" then walked off. I hope the novelty of what seems to him to be a new game hasn't wore off as he is doing so well.
He is at Nana's house tonight and she said she'd try it with him and see if she can spark some enthusiasm in him, but at this early stage i wouldn't hold my breath but am keeping my fingers crossed!!!
Enjoy your weekend and I'll update soon.xXx
