Taylor's Statement has finally arrived woohoo!! It's not the final document yet though. We received it yesterday and i read through it, to be honest none of it made any sense to me the first time round though!! I left it for a few hours, showed mum, she read it and told me what it said. I was gobsmacked so i read it myself again when Taylor went to bed.
It says: Taylor has been allocated not 1 but 2 support workers for the FULL school day. He also has 3 support workers for certain situations. Although it doesn't actually specify what, I'm guessing possibly for school trips, day's out etc. He has been granted a support worker for personal care (nappies, washing his hands, face etc and help with getting changed for activities such as P.E or school plays etc) Someone will be with him at play time's and dinner time's which we asked for, so very happy about that. He is also able to do like he does at Nursery now. Go and choose an activity(s) of his choice for a certain amount of the day then be encouraged to go and sit down with the rest of the class and join in with the class work (curriculum) then be allowed to go back to his choice. They have stated that for 30min's a day everyday he has to be in a group of no more than 6 children to play a group game to enhance his turn taking and joining in skills. School have also told us that they will find him a 'quiet area' where he can go to himself at anytime of the day to sleep, relax, calm down or just get away from it all when it gets too much for him or gets too noisy. It will be just his space and nobody elses, which is really good. He will be able to go and be alone there to play or work etc. He does that now at Nursery and since last weekend at home too and it's working brilliantly so far.
The list of things is endless but most importantly they have given him everything we asked for and a whole lot more so i am very very pleased and my confidence is growing stronger and stronger by the day now that he will be just fine. When we had the meeting at Nursery the lady that will be teaching Taylor & the SEN Coordinator asked loads of questions like does he have a dummy (pacifier) or suck his thumb, have a blanket or a favourite teddy that he may be able to take with him to school that would help to comfort him, i would never have thought of them questions, but he doesn't have a dummy, blanket or suck his thumb, he doesn't even have a favourite teddy!! But I'm glad they asked because that would have been a comfort to know that if he did they would have encouraged it rather than tell him (if he sucked his thumb) stop sucking your thumb (they did that with me at school and i hated them for it - I sucked my thumb & had a blanket until i was 21 and I'm 27 now!!)
Over all we are in very high spirits and looking forward to his first day at school (i am still nervous as hell) and they have also said that we can still take his book to school. We have a blue folder at Nursery that we all write in how he's been and what he's done that day at home (by me - obviously) and at Nursery (by nursery staff) and it's been really useful to us all. School have suggested we carry it on there too, so i am really chuffed about that. It's not that i don't trust them it's just that it's nice to read about what he's done that day, as unlike most 4yr olds he can't tell us what he's done that day or what has been his favourite bit of the day and that saddens me a lot, but i just look forward to the day that he can do and i have no doubt in my mind i will never forget it, like when he said his first words as a baby!!!
Anyways, I'm going to leave on a high note today, so good night and sweet dreams everybody. xXx
